PCOS Awareness Month at WUKA
During September, we partnered with Verity PCOS, the UK's only Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Charity and collaborated with Harnaam Kaur, motivational speaker, social activist and campaigner to raise awareness for PCOS.
We kicked off the month with Verity PCOS.
Here's a run-through of the questions we asked focusing on PCOS:
1. What is PCOS and how is it diagnosed?
2. If your menstrual cycle is irregular, does that mean I may have PCOS?
3. How does one treat PCOS?
4. Does PCOS affect fertility?
5. What are some myths that you can debunk about PCOS?
6. Is there anything that PCOS directly affects?
6. Is there anything that PCOS directly affects?
WUKA X VERITY PCOS
We spoke to Professor Wiebke Arlt (Professor and Consultant Endocrinologist, Wiebke leads the DAISy-PCOS research programme funded by Wellcome Trust) "@daisypcos" on instagram.
Dr Amina Hersi (GP, ‘thepcosdr’ on instagram and one of our DAISy-PCOS leaders supporting our public engagement activities).
Here's what we learnt from Dr Hersi and Professor Arlt:
PCOS, also known as polycystic ovarian syndrome, is a common health problem caused by an imbalance of reproductive hormones. There is an increased level of androgens, which is traditionally described as the 'male' hormone and people with PCOS have higher levels of testosterone which leads to key symptoms like acne, excess body hair and hair thinning.

It is not curable, but symptoms are manageable with a healthy lifestyle, diet and exercise regime.
It is always important to consult your GP if you want more information.
